I’ve heard that it’s possible to do it without going to the dealer, but I’m not exactly sure how. Does anyone know the steps for programming a key fob for a 2015 model? I’d really like to give it a try to save some money, but if it’s too complicated, I might have to call in a locksmith. Any advice or tips would be great!
Hey there! I actually just went through this with my 2015 Grand Cherokee, so I got you covered. First off, yeah, you can totally do it yourself and save some cash—no need to hand over more dough to the dealer if you don't have to!
Here’s how it went for me:
- I put the key in the ignition and turned it to the "on" position (but don’t start the engine, just get the electronics on).
- Then, I had to press and hold the "unlock" button on the fob. While still holding that, press the "panic" button for a second, then let go of both.
- After that, you should press both the "lock" and "unlock" buttons at the same time for about 3-4 seconds. Then, let go of the "unlock" button.
- Turn the key back to "off" and remove it.
If you did it right, you should hear the doors lock and unlock, like magic, to confirm it worked.
Now, here’s the funny part—first time I tried, I totally botched it and nothing happened. Turns out I didn’t hold the buttons long enough. I had to give it another go, and voilà! It worked.
So, give it a shot. Worst case, you just try again until it sticks. If all else fails, I guess the locksmith is your backup, but I’m betting you’ll nail it. Good luck!
